New York State of Emergency is a Long Islanders’ green light for a perfect sledding day.

 

If you grew up on Long Island we’re sure you’ve had some incredible times at these iconic sledding locations, which Long Island does not have a shortage of!

NASSAU COUNTY

1. Cedar Creek Park 

Location: 3340 Merrick Rd., Seaford, NY 11783

Feels like a rollercoaster.  Plenty of parking.

 

2. Newbridge Road Park 

Location: 2600 Newbridge Rd., Bellmore, NY 11710

Our personal favorite.  One large steep hill.

 

3. Hempstead Lake State Park 

Location: Eagle Ave., West Hempstead, NY 11552

Park in Field 3. Right by the pond.  Perfect for little kids.

 

4. Dead Man’s Hill 

Location: Exit 15 on Southern State Parkway, North Valley Stream

Proceed with caution!

 

5. Baldwin Harbor Park 

Location: 3232 Grand Ave., Baldwin, NY 11510

Lots of space.  Close to the water.

 

6. Eisenhower Park 

Location: 1899 Hempstead Tpke., East Meadow, NY 11554

“Sled Hill” near Field 1.  This park is massive.

 

7. Flower Hill Village Park 

Location: 1 Bonnie Heights Road, Manhasset, NY 11030

This is right near some of the hilliest parts of Long Island.

 

8. Grant Park 

Location: 1625 Broadway, Hewlett, NY 11557

This is one of Nassau County’s top sledding spots.

 

9. Gerry Park 

Location: 10 Papermill Rd., Roslyn, NY 11576

Check out the southwestern slopes next to the library.  The people are nice, and kids take turn going down a gentle slope.

 

10. Syosset-Woodbury Community Park 

Location: 7800 Jericho Tpke., Woodbury, NY 11797

Decently steep and long.  Classic spot that has been popular for decades.  Plenty of room.

 

11. Malverne High School 

Location: 80 Ocean Ave., Malverne, NY 11565

Locals call this sledding location “The Pits.”

 

12. Herricks High School 

Location: 100 Shelter Rock Rd., New Hyde Park, NY 11040

This has some of the best hills around the area.

 

13. Washington Avenue Park 

Location: 1410 Washington Ave., Seaford, NY 11783

Steep hills around a sunken baseball field.

 

14. Christopher Morley Park 

Location: 500 Searingtown Road N., Roslyn, NY 11576

 

15. Bethpage State Park 

Location: 99 Quaker Meetinghouse Rd., Farmingdale, NY 11735 

Steerable sleds only.  5 golf courses to sled on.

 

16. Great Neck Park District

Location: 65 Arrandale Ave., Great Neck, NY 11024

Parking is available at Kings Point Park (Redbrook Rd).  For safety reasons, Sled Hill does not operate until after a snowfall has ended.  One sled goes down at a time and walking back up the steps on the right to slide down again is a rule that must be followed. Hours of Operation are 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. on weekends, holidays and snow-related school closings and 3-5 p.m. on school days.

 

17. Howard B. Mattlin Middle School

Location: 100 Washington Ave., Plainview, NY 11803

Hill between Plainview Old Bethpage John F Kennedy High School and Mattlin Middle School.

 

18. Suicide Hill

Location: West side of the Meadowbrook Parkway, Merrick, NY 11566

Popular steep and fast hill for thrill-seekers.

 

19. Plandome Country Club

Location: 145 Stonytown Road, Plandome, NY 11030

Private property.

 

20. Garden City Golf Club

Location: 315 Stewart Ave., Garden City, NY 11530

Private property.

 

21. Halls Pond Park

Location: 671 Nassau Blvd #635, West Hempstead, NY 11552

Not a super popular spot.

 

22. Jerusalem Ave. Overpass Hill

Location: Wantagh, NY 11793

Proceed with caution!

 

SUFFOLK COUNTY

1. Bald Hill Cultural Park 

Location: 1 Ski Run Lane, Ocean Avenue, Farmingville, NY 11738

Steep and exhilarating slopes because this was formerly a skiing location!  This is one of, if not the, highest point on Long Island. Make sure to go behind Jane’s Hill in Huntington or nearby Telescope Hill.  

 

2. Wildwood State Park 

Location: 790 Hulse Landing Rd., Wading River, NY 11792

Slopes near “closed for winter” roadways.

 

3. Islip Grange

Location: 10 Broadway Ave., Sayville, NY 11782

Known as “The Grange” by locals. Perfect for little kids.

 

4. Hoyt Farm Nature Preserve 

Location: 200 New Hwy., Commack, NY 11725

Parking lot available.  Perfect for little kids.  Smithtown residents only.

 

5. Herman Griem Park 

Location: 54 Brown Blvd., Wheatley Heights, NY 11798

When you’re at the top of the hill, the steeper terrain is to the left!

 

6. Heckscher Park 

Location: NY-25A & Prime Ave., 11 Prime Ave., Huntington, NY 11743

Small, but steep, and lengthy runs.

 

7. Sunshine Park 

Location: 479 Town Line Rd., Commack, NY 11725

Parking lot available.

 

8. Heckscher State Park 

Location: 1 Heckscher State Parkway, East Islip, NY 11730

Not to be confused with Heckscher Park in Huntington.  This is a far less popular spot.

 

9. Frazer Drive Park 

Location: 4 Frazer Dr., Greenlawn, NY 11740

A must-experience spot for locals.

 

10. Belmont Lake State Park 

Location: 625 Belmont Ave., West Babylon, NY 11704

Perfect for little kids. Avoid the hills near the large lake!

 

11. Mattituck-Cutchogue High School 

Location: 15125 Main Rd., Mattituck, NY 11952

Be careful as you cross the street!

 

12. Southampton Youth Services Rec Center 

Location: 1370A Majors Path, Southampton, NY 11968

Perfect for little kids.

 

13. South Huntington School District Office 

Location: 60 Weston St., Huntington Station, NY 11746

Perfect for little kids.

 

14. Hauppauge High School 

Location: 500 Lincoln Blvd., Hauppauge, NY 11788

Park right in school lot on Lincoln Blvd off Vets Hwy.

 

15. Heritage Park 

Location: 633 Mount Sinai-Coram Rd., Mt. Sinai, NY 11766

There is a big parking lot available.  Known by locals as “The Wedge” because you can use both sides of “the wedge” for sledding.

 

16. William J. Byrne Memorial Park 

Location: 258 Clay Pitts Rd., East Northport, NY 11731

There is a parking lot at the bottom of the hill.

 

17. Sachem East High School 

Location: 177 Granny Rd., Farmingville, NY 11738

Easy and accessible location for families and children alike.

 

18. Walt Whitman High School 

Location: 301 W. Hills Rd., Huntington Station, NY 11746

Not a super popular location.

 

19. Brookhaven Town Hall 

Location: 1 Independence Hill, Farmingville, NY 11738

Top-rated location.  Parking available but limited.

 

20. Indian Hollow Primary School 

Location: 151 Kings Park Rd. #1643, Commack, NY 11725

Not a super popular location.

 

21. Wicks Park 

Location: 90 Wicks Rd., Commack, NY 11725

One of the popular sledding locations in Commack.

 

22. Fort Salonga Elementary School

Location: 39 Sunken Meadow Rd., Fort Salonga, NY 11768

This hill is a big hit with the kids.

 

23. Kings Park Psychatric Center

Location: across from Provenzano’s located at 84 E Main St, Kings Park, NY 11754

This abandoned facility is a popular sledding location for locals.  Although locals report never having any issues, proceed with caution as this facility is still used for outpatient clients.  

 

24. Sunken Meadow State Park

Location: New York State Reference Rte. 908K, Kings Park, NY 11754

Popular hills are Snake Hill and Cardiac Hill.  For tubing only, sledding is too dangerous.

 

25. NYS Route 231 & Sunrise Highway Overpass

Location: West Islip, NY 11795

Proceed with caution!

 

26. Captree State Park

Location: 3500 Ocean Pkwy., Bay Shore, NY 11706

Not a super popular location.

 

27. Chateau at Coindre Hall

Location: 101 Browns Rd, Huntington, NY 11743

Beautiful view of a mansion overlooking Huntington Harbor.  Suffolk County acquired this mansion in 1973 and has since been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

 

28. St. George’s Country Club

Location: 134 Lower Sheep Pasture Road, East Setauket, New York 11733

Additional parking available on Sheep Pasture Road.  Private property.

 

29. Port Jefferson High School 

Location: 350 Old Post Rd W, Port Jefferson, NY 11777

There is plenty of parking available.  Locals refer to this location as “The Bowl.”

 

30. Half Hollow Hills High School East

Location: 50 Vanderbilt Parkway, Dix Hills, NY 11746

 

31. Bellerose Ave Elementary School

Location: 253 Bellerose Ave, East Northport, NY 11731

 

32. Devil’s Hill 

Location: Lake Grove

 

33. Coram Fire Department

Location: 303 Middle Country Rd., Coram, NY 11727

Locals sled on the hill behind the fire department.

 

34. Smithtown Landing Golf Course

Location: 495 Landing Ave. # 1, Smithtown, NY 11787
 
Locals sled down hills near the 18th hole.

 

35. Koster Park Playgroud

Location: Engelke Ave., Huntington Station, NY 11746

Not a super popular spot.

 

36. Robert Clemente Park

Location: 400 Broadway, Brentwood, NY 11717

This is a favorite for many locals.

 

37. Pierson Middle-High School

Location: 200 Jermain Ave., Sag Harbor, NY 11963

This is a beautiful location to go sledding.

 

38. Huntington Crescent Club

Location: 15 Washington Dr., Huntington, NY 11743

Be aware that this is private property.

 

39. The Creek

Location: 1 Horse Hollow Rd., Locust Valley, NY 11560

Be aware that this is also private property.

 

40. Atlantic Beach (AB) Bridge 
Location: Atlantic Beach Bridge, Atlantic Beach, NY 11509

A local favorite.
